The Homework Club in February 2012

I have lot's of offeres of financial support coming in for the Homework Club, but I cannot accept it yet because as a project I do not have the correct legal structures to accept the help that is being offered. I am dedicating February to writing my business paln and registering as a company so that i have the right structures in place to help the Homework Club progress.

I have begun looking for tutors to deliver tuition as well as Homework help support and resources.

so I will very soon be able to use the help being offered by companies and individuals to the homework club to provide high quality targeted support to the communities young people who have already told me that they want to sign up for the services the Homework Club has to offer.

Feeling very positive, but have a lot of work ahead of me.

Some members of the Homework Club with Chip

The young people of the homework club made me really proud. They are now looking at ways that they can start their own projects. It just goes to show sharing experiences with others can really help to inspire.

Knights Youth Centre

Excellent start to a first homeowk club session at KYC. The young people were telling me what they wanted and I have had a request for some A level revision guides.

On the run up to Exams, I find it inspiring that young people are enjoying comparing what they know about science. We even have a competition running so next week whoever can name the most elements from the periodic table will win a prize. okay so it means a little extra work from me to prepare, but if they are engaging and happy and making the choice that that is what they want to do, then to me it will be worth it.

A big shout out and Thank you to the staff and young people at KYC for making me feel welcome and like part of the team. Just goes to show, education and recreation can go hand in hand, and I feel proud to be working with you all.

Monday = Homework Club Day

Okay, so today I am looking at the prospect of a 16+ hour day. I am on the bus drinking coffee heading to work early to do a residential visit to one of my young people placed more then an hour away from the office. When I finish work I am off to KYC where I am going to introduce education and homework to the youth club for the first time.

It's exciting stuff, but a little nerve racking.

I am thinking on a totally different level that I need to drive to continue working my job and the different project sites.

Let's start promoting

I have spent my Sunday afternoon creating posters to let people know where and when the Homework Clubs are. I am not a graphic designer and perhaps should have asked someone from O2 to help as they have done so well creating matrerial for the campaign... Butr the information is on there so all I have to do is print and make sure they go up. :)

first day at new youth centre - homework club is growing

After work I spent a few hours at our new homework club site KYC in Clapham/Streatham. What a lovely group of young people and great staff team. They made me feel really welcome and I feel as if the homework club is moving in the right direction supporting those who want and need it. Soon we will have the entire country doing homework... Still thinking big, where shall we go next??? ;0)

Kennington Park Community Centre

I spent a couple of hours this evening chilling with the young people at the community centre. They are the magic that make the Homework Club what it is. I want to arrange a special viewing of the video and a treat for them all... but when and how??? need some suggestions.

NATIONAL CAMPAIGN LAUNCH - THE HARD WORK BEGINS

Preparing for a day of interviews and press coverage to launch the Homework club campaign which is now supported by the artist Chipmunk. I couldn't be happier. My message is now going out to hundreds of people and I hope they follow my lead and set up homework clubs in their local communities.

Some of my friends have even seen the cinema trailer and have now said they would like to get into youth work :)

Log on to www.o2thinkbig.co.uk and see if a homework club is right for your young people.

Chipmunk supports Marie

From an early age, I struggled to balance the competing demands of school, my love of football and obviously music. But my parents kept me focused and encouraged me to work hard. Not everybody has that support and lots of kids need extra help to stay on track at school.

When you’re 15 or 16 you’ve got lots going on in your life and homework is not always high on your list of things to do, especially if you’ve not got someone at home in your ear. With the help of O2 Think Big, Marie came up with a great solution – providing young people with a chilled out space where they can hang out together and help each other. Now I want tohelp her get the message out to other young people so they can follow in her footsteps and create their own homework clubs.

FUNDING?!?!

Not long now until I find out whether or not the Homework Club was successful in recieving funding to grow the project.

I am always on the hunt for funding opportunities. Currently I am looking for funding to employ staff to grow the project as well as to purchase new equipment and expand to other sites. It's all very exciting.

If you know of anywhere that we could apply please drop us a line. We appreciate all of your help and support, and welcome suggestions and ideas :)

run up to summer

The Homework club has been closed over the summer, but had a fantastic run up to it. young people attended regularly and even requested that I create work for them to do so that hey could be involved.

The satff and volunteers at Kennington Park community Centre are amazing and so supportive. I couldn't ask for a better team at a venue.

They are supportive of the learning, but allow the young people to make their own choices about whether or not to take part. This is what the Homework club is all about, empowering young poeple to make choices for themselves and learning to prioritise.

Couldn't have done the run up to summer without you all (staff and young people)

:)

My Venue

I have provisionally secured a venue in Kennington Lambeth, so providing the funding comes through in time I should be ready to start on Tuesday 5th April.

Residential & Training

Inspiring is all I can say.

The other Think Bigger projects were amazing and I couldn't have asked for a better group of people to attend the training with.

I am now more motivated then ever and The Homework Club has all the support it needs to deliver its service.

I have a great mentor, and a good think bigger team.

Watch this space for collaborative events, and fundraisers.

changes to the homework club

After starting our homework club on the 28th September and running very successful sessions with young people we received sad news that the organisation who agreed to host the homework club were no longer going to be operating due to lack of funds.

Unfortunately this meant that the homework club would temporarily stop running until such a time that I can find a new venue.

A new organisation have agreed to support me in developing the homework club.

I aim to secure funding to make the project sustainable. this will help to secure a venue and staff primarily.

We have a computer, Wireless internet dongle (for access to the internet for research projects etc), calculators, rubbers, rulers, pens, pencils, sharpeners, paper, glue, protractors, folders, and much more... I will get more details about what the young people need in the first week of the project by consulting with the young people.

We are starting!!!

An organisation named FlipSide have said that I can incorporate the homework club with their Tuesday evening sessions.

I have a proposed start date of Tuesday 28th September.

I have already had positive feedback from some of the young people who attend the youth club particularly those starting secondary school.

Sessions will run every Tuesday from 5-7pm.

More talks with venues

After being told by my original organisation that it was not possible to host a homework club at the venue, I have been approaching community centres and youth clubs to try and see if they will support the project by loaning us the use of a hall or room one day a week for three hours. I am just waiting for a response.

I have purchased equipment such as calculators, pens pencils, rulers protractors and have even managed to pay to get a broken computer fixed for the young people to use to conduct research and type up work.

I am positive that we will have a favourable response from the managers of sites.

Fingers crossed we will be able to start at the end of September, or beginning of October.

Start date for the Homework Club

I have sent two proposals to two different organisations requesting a start date in Mid September when the school year starts.

I have had positive feedback from one organisation who are keen to have a homework club to help support their young people who are performers and struggle to find time to rehearse and keep on top of their homework without having to sacrifice one for the other.

I am now only waiting for my own timetable before setting a specific start date.

I am still awaiting a response from the second organisation.

In both cases I have stated that I will provide equipment for the young people to complete their homework, and have requested 3 months free room hire until I am in a position to secure more funding to pay for the hire of the venue.

So far so good.

Hello, I would like to introduce you to the Mydesign project which gives young people the opportunity to be creative by making their own T-shirts, Badges, key rings, bags, fridge magnets, bottle openers and medals every weekday at 4.30-6.30 in the summer holiday and term times. Within the summer the project has worked with around 85 children from the age of 7-13 and we are working with five different schools across the Croydon borough. Another benefit of the My Design project is that we can also provide services for other companies through means of T-shirt printing, badge making and a lot more for staff uniforms, promotional purposes and etc. If you are interested in any services we provide please contact us via email: leon@mydesignproject.org or mobile: 07940362877. www.mydesignproject.org
