My Brighton

Led by Jack Mead and Rosie Bayley

‘My Brighton’ is a creative project designed to enable young refugees to express themselves through different media for example, photography, art and creative writing.

Project steps

1: Drop in session (10th January)
Jack and Rosie will attend the drop in session at the refugee organisation 'Pathways to Independence' and talk to the young people about ‘My Brighton’, introduce themselves and answer any questions. We will find out what the young people are interested in and what they want to get out of the project. We will also get feedback from the group about where they want to go to take photos to help the us plan the photography session. The young people will be invited to the o2 training session if they are interested in coming.
2: Training Session 20th January/Planning project
After attending the training session on 20th January, Jack and Rosie will: a) Plan the project sessions b) Buy/collect the materials needed for the project e.g. digital cameras, art materials, display boards. The young people will be invited to help with this.
3: Project Sessions (21st-27th February)
Session 1: Photography. The group will go in to Brighton to take photos. A local photographer will come along and share some tips. Session 2: Creative writing workshop. This workshop will use the photos that the young people took in the last session. It will also involve exercises to develop the young people’s language skills. If there is an interest in performance or poetry then Dizraeli (a local Brighton slam poet) has offered to come along and give some tips. Session 3: Putting the project together. The group will then put their pictures and writing together on display boards (with other materials that are personal to them e.g. cinema tickets/receipts/bus tickets/posters).They will present their work to each other and feedback to group.
4: Project display planning (March-date to be decided)
The group can choose venues to display their work, contact them, design flyers and hand them out and publicise through the local media (for example, The Argus newspaper and local radio station Radio Reverb).
5: Travelling Display (May-June)
The project will then become a travelling display in local Brighton venues. During Refugee Week in June, Brighton Council have agreed to display the project in Jubilee Library.

Project display planning-the next session

We are in the process of planning this, hopefully it will take place on 21st April. In this session we will plan where the project will be displayed and how to promote it. It will also give some of the young people the chance to finish their displays. A charity called Refugee Youth Project is doing a photography project in Croydon and we have discussed collaborating to hold our first display in Brighton at the end of May.

Update

We ran the project sessions a few weeks ago over half term and they went really well. The photography session on Tuesday was great a lot of people came and we went out in to Brighton to take photos in groups and at the end we played football on the beach. The creative writing session on Friday went well too and the group got lots of good ideas about Brighton written down. Our last session was on Saturday, the group made collages of their photos and put them in display frames, at the end we all shared some pizza! Here are some photos of the project workshops-have a look!

The project so far..

We have booked up our training day on 20th January and also found a venue to hold the project in, The Cowley Club in Brighton. Jack's friend Ed has designed a project flyer for us too.
